TOSHIMA, one of the small islands belongs to Tokyo. The size of the island is just 4.12 and there are 340 of population.

About 80 per cent of the island is camellia tree. These produce quality camellia oil. Even thought it is a small island, it has number one share in domestic camellia oil market.

In Summer time, people mow the grass to prepare for harvest. In autumn time, people pick up camellia seeds one by one on the ground. And seeds are carried into the oil factory for oil crushing procedure.

The camellia oil is main industry of Toshima rooted in people life for over two hundred years.

There is no high school in the islands, however its population does not decrease. After graduated from middle school, the students are forced to leave their home. Then again, they will be back to Toshima islands to protect its tradition.

Also, there are many migrants who are fascinated by the island from domestic Japan.

Many people visit Toshima in order to support camellia farmers as a volunteer activity.

The camellia culture season to season, and the people involved in the industry, I feel each of them circulate the tradition of Toshima.

People are standing close to full of nature. There is no need of urban entertainment. I have been recording by photo since 2015 in order to touch its regional culture. I am also the one who are fascinated by its natural culture.
